The Avant Garde Diaries. Helen Homan + Aki Onda.

HOMAN WU
A Different Sort of Value. Cassette Memories.
Walking along New York’s East River, Japanese artist Aki Onda records sounds that would otherwise slip away into the background. For over the past 20 years, Onda has perfected his cassette recording techniques with little more than a Walkman by his side and an intuitive sense of composition. Having seen Onda perform at a recent music festival, he was adopted by Helen Homan Wu’s Opalnest, a New York multi-media production agency. Since 2007, Opalnest has fostered artists who have made careers out of avant-garde pursuits in the audio-visual field.

Gardens & Villa. Band. Santa Barbara.

Song: Black Hills
*single tear

Song: Star Fire Power
SO. FUCKING. GOOD.
Gardens & Villa is the project of college friends Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, and Shane McKillop who formed in 2008 following the collapse of a noisier post-punk band and a hitch-hiking journey up the west coast. Their name is pulled from the location of their house on Villa Street, the music they make is connected to coastal city they call home - stoney bike rides + dance parties... the band refers to this Santa Barbara feeling as "coco vibes." For two weeks in the summer of 2010, the band camped behind visionary and now-labelmate Richard Swift's Oregon studio. Soon after they added member Dusty Ineman to supremely execute the live incarnation of the band.

Best Coast. Music. LA.

Best Coast is my go-to band right now for rad summer tunes that remind me of Cali road tripping/surf/90's Hole.

While living in Brooklyn, Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino looked for a way to get a taste of her native land and drew from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s aesthetic of The Beach Boys and The Everly Brothers. Creating her own little Southern California in her bedroom wasn’t enough however, and she decided to move back to LA and started recording soon after. Best Coast is a natural combo of Cosentino’s musical influences and her inherent Californian-ness.
